Authorities in Los Angeles have released shocking new details from the early Saturday morning incident in which a vehicle plowed into a crowd of people outside The Vermont Hollywood music club in East Hollywood. At least 30 people were injured, seven of them critically, according to the LA Fire Department.
The driver of the vehicle, believed to be intoxicated, drove through a taco stand, the valet podium and then into a crowd waiting to enter the bar. The scene was described as “chaotic” by Fire Captain Adam VanGerpen.
After the vehicle stopped, the driver was pulled out of the car and physically attacked by bystanders. During the collision, one of them shot him. Police said he is in stable condition after surgery, but is in custody and being investigated for attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Meanwhile, the shooter is on the run. Police have identified the perpetrator as a man wearing a blue shirt, wielding a silver handgun. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Among the injured are 18 women and 12 men, with an average age of 25–35. The victims have broken bones and soft tissue injuries; one of the injured also has gunshot wounds.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the incident "a heartbreaking tragedy" and thanked the more than 100 officers who intervened to save lives. Footage from the scene showed ordinary citizens helping the injured, while others were taken on stretchers to hospitals.
Investigations into the incident continue as the city struggles to cope with the aftermath of a night that began with music and ended in terror.
