The cocaine found in the White House appears to have caused alarm among US intelligence agencies.
According to the Washington Post, the Secret Service is investigating a suspicious substance that led to a brief evacuation when it was spotted inside the White House on Sunday evening.
The substance, which was a white powder, tested positive for cocaine, according to a preliminary test result.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the substance is undergoing further testing to determine what it is. At the same time, authorities are investigating how cocaine got into the White House. However, the Washington Fire Department has announced that the substance is not a threat.
The discovery of the substance has put the services on increased security alert, while there was also an emergency evacuation of the area. According to Guglielmi, President Biden was not in the White House at the time.
Investigations are underway into the cause and manner of the introduction of the substance into the White House.
Guglielmi declined to provide details on exactly where the substance was found and how it was packaged. He did not provide details and said he was found by members of the Secret Service, who were conducting routine patrols of the building.
During the department-led mission, at 8:49 p.m. a firefighter with the Washington department's hazardous materials team radioed the results of a test: "We have a yellow strip that says cocaine hydrochloride."
