Since June 15, Tirana Police have announced that they have referred 151 protesters to the Prosecutor's Office for criminal offenses of disturbing public peace, obstructing traffic, and illegal assembly.

For almost a month, thousands of protesters have been gathering every evening on the "Martyrs of the Nation" boulevard in Tirana in opposition to plans to build a tourist resort linked to the US president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner - protests that have expanded to demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and against the political establishment.

Although the number of people referred by the Police has been increasing, the Tirana Prosecution Office says it has not yet registered any criminal proceedings against them.

Official sources from the Tirana Prosecution Office told BIRN that as of Monday afternoon, 6 criminal reports had been registered and were still in the verification phase, and the rest of the referrals were in the registration process.

" Up to this moment, no criminal proceedings have been registered in relation to these cases ," the Prosecution stated.

Dozens of protesters and activists learned from the media that police were seeking criminal charges against them, and were stopped in the street by plainclothes officers, which lawyers say violated standard procedures. Protesters previously interviewed by BIRN accused the police of mass prosecutions as 'intimidation tactics'.

The protest itinerary of the movement called the "Flamingo Revolution" that has filled the streets of the capital for a month begins with the gathering of citizens in Skanderbeg Square, continuing in front of the Prime Minister's Office, and then follows various main streets of the city.

All protests have been peaceful, with tens of thousands of citizens demanding the removal of the prime minister and opposition leader, including children accompanied by their parents, the elderly, family members, and foreign tourists. / BIRN
