Of the 717 votes counted, 207 gave Scholz their confidence, 394 demanded the overthrow of the government and 116 abstained.
After three hours of Bundestag debate, the deputies raised their cards to vote the motion of no confidence against Scholz. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as planned, has lost the vote of confidence, paving the way for early elections on February 23.
Of the 717 votes counted, 207 gave Scholz their confidence, 394 demanded the overthrow of the government and 116 abstained. Scholz had required 367 votes of confidence to "win" the vote.
"We have reached the end of our daily agenda as well as of the traffic light coalition ," said Bundestag Speaker Bärbel Bas, using the nickname of the now-defunct tripartite coalition.
Scholz smiled at the result and shook the hand of his vice-chancellor, Robert Habeck.
Debates abounded during today's session in the Bundestag, with the leader of the Christian Democrats, Friedrich Merz, expected to succeed Scholz as Germany's next chancellor after the February elections. He said Scholz should have immediately called a vote of confidence after the government fell last month.
Opposition leader Merz also attacked Scholz, calling him incompetent and pointing out that Scholz's shortcomings undermined Germany on the European stage.
" Olaf Scholz was not able to lead the coalition successfully as chancellor. It is shameful how he acted in the European Union ," he said during his speech in the Bundestag.
Even Alice Weidel, co-leader of the far-right AfD, during her speech, echoed Merz's charge that Scholz should have called the vote of confidence immediately after the government fell last month. She attacks the previous coalition for what she calls a failed migration policy and calls for the "immediate" return of Syrian refugees to Germany.
On the other hand, the Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economy, Robert Habeck of the Greens, admitted during his speech that the government failed to overcome its formidable political differences.
" We were bored with each other and the traffic light coalition in many ways deserved its bad reputation ," he said, referring to the colors of the three parties in the failed alliance.
The chancellor will now go to Berlin's Bellevue Palace to ask President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve parliament and allow general elections on February 23./ Pamphlet
