The German government said supporters of the ousted regime of Bashar Al-Assad will be brought to justice if they go to Germany to hide after the fall of the Syrian dictator.
"We will hold all the successors of the regime accountable for their terrible crimes to the fullest extent of the law ," Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told the weekly Bild am Sonntag.
Baerbock called for international security authorities and intelligence services to work together as soon as possible.
"If the descendants of the Assad regime of terror try to flee to Germany, they should know that virtually no other country prosecutes their crimes as harshly as Germany," said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, in the same newspaper.
"Anyone who participated in the atrocity will not be immune from prosecution ," Faeser added.
Germany has already convicted several officials of Bashar Al-Assad's government under the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows trials to be held regardless of where the crimes were committed.
