Germany imposes strict measures to curb the large number of immigrants

Germany's Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and 16 state governors have agreed to introduce new, stricter measures to curb the large number of immigrants coming to Germany.

Scholz and state governors reached a compromise Tuesday morning on the issue, which has become a major political nuisance for the government and a hot topic for society.

The new measures include speeding up asylum procedures, limiting benefits for asylum seekers and increasing financial assistance from the Federal Government to states and local communities to cope with the influx.

Speaking on Tuesday morning, after a meeting last night that lasted several hours, Scholz described the agreement as a "historic moment", which shows how much of a burden this issue had become for his Government.

The state and federal governments agreed to change the system of funding the costs for asylum seekers. Starting next year, the federal government will pay an annual sum of 7,500 euros to each asylum seeker and no longer a total annual sum of 3.7 billion euros for them.

Scholzi called this change "transition to a breathing system" and said that "as the number increases there is no money, as the number decreases there is less".

Shelters for immigrants and refugees in Germany have been filling up for several months now, and Scholz, who faces intense pressure from the opposition and others to halt the trend, said "a lot are coming."

The number of asylum seekers for this year was 73 percent higher by the end of September than in the same period last year, official data show.

Germany has also taken in more than a million Ukrainians since Russia launched its invasion of their homeland in February 2022.

More than 250,000 people applied for asylum in Germany from January to September, compared with 130,000 in the same period last year. Most of the asylum seekers come from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey./ REL
