Belgium's Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborn announced his resignation after new information about the Brussels terrorist came to light.
"This morning at 9 am, I noticed that on August 15, 2022, there was an extradition request from Tunisia for this man. This request was forwarded on September 1 by the legal expert to the public prosecution in Brussels. The relevant judge did not respond to this request for extradition and the file was not processed ," said the former minister.
He emphasized that it is "an individual mistake". A monumental mistake. An unacceptable error. A mistake with dramatic consequences. The independence of a judge is the foundation of our rule of law. I have always defended this principle and will continue to defend it. As Minister of Justice, under no circumstances can I interfere with the decisions of a judge.
"Although this is the work of a single and independent judge, I still want to take responsibility for this unacceptable mistake. I'm not looking for an excuse at all. I'm not looking for excuses. I feel it's my duty to do that ," Vincent Van Quickenborn concluded.
Lasuet Abdeslam, who was killed after a clash with police on Tuesday morning, was living illegally in Belgium after submitting an asylum application in 2019, which was rejected, but since 2021 he has been lost. According to the prime minister of Belgium, the 45-year-old was known to the police for traffic and threats to public safety.
