The European Union is carefully analyzing the decision of the United States Supreme Court, which declared tariffs imposed during the administration of President Donald Trump illegal.
"We are taking the decision into account and analyzing it carefully," European Commission spokesman Olof Gill told AFP. He added that Brussels is awaiting "clarifications" from the US government on the measures it intends to take following the decision.
Gill stressed that the stability of trade relations is essential for both sides. "Businesses on both sides of the Atlantic depend on stable and predictable trading relationships. That is why we continue to support low tariffs and work to reduce them," he said.
The European Commission has not yet announced the concrete consequences that the Supreme Court's decision may have on the trade agreement reached last summer between the EU and the US. This agreement reduced US tariffs on most European products to 15%.
According to AFP, the Supreme Court's decision could affect the pace of implementation of this agreement. The European Parliament's Trade Committee is expected to vote on the issue on Tuesday.
The head of this committee, German Social Democrat MEP Bernd Lange, announced that he has called an "extraordinary meeting of the negotiating team and the European Parliament's legal service" on Monday to consider the next steps and the impact of the decision on the anticipated calendar.
"Since a large part of the retaliatory tariffs are based on a legal framework that is now being questioned, neither the US government nor the European Union can act as if nothing had happened," Lange declared.
Future developments will depend on the official stance of the US administration and the legal assessment that European institutions will make.
