UKMTO confirms the incident, the crew responded with warning shots and no damage or injuries are reported.
A security incident has been recorded in the Gulf of Aden today, where a tanker reported the approach of six suspicious speedboats while underway. The incident was confirmed by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which said the alert was made at around 10:19am.
According to the reported data, one of the speedboats approached the tanker to within about 900 meters on the starboard side. The armed security team on board responded with warning shots, which forced the vessel to leave. The other five speedboats remained at a distance of approximately one nautical mile and did not take any further action.
Authorities have launched investigations to clarify the circumstances of the incident. So far, there are no reports of injuries or material damage to the tanker.
EOS Marine calls the report credible and urges commercial vessels transiting the area to increase security measures. Recommendations include continuous visual and electronic monitoring, immediate reporting of any unusual activity to the responsible authorities, and full readiness of onboard security teams.
It is also advisable to implement international BMP practices for ship self-defense, with the aim of reducing the risk of potential approaches or attacks.
The event comes at a time when the security situation in the Middle East remains sensitive and shipping companies are carefully monitoring developments in key shipping corridors.
Although small fishing vessels and other civilian vessels regularly transit the Gulf of Aden, authorities stress that any suspicious behavior should be carefully assessed. According to them, although pirate attacks are rarer than in previous years, transit in this area continues to require high security measures, especially for tankers and commercial ships.
