Gaza peace deal, negotiators expected to finalize pact

Peace in Gaza has never been closer since the conflict began. Media reports are also encouraging that negotiators in Qatar are expected to finalize a deal, suggesting that Israel and Hamas are on the verge of reaching an agreement.

A Palestinian source told the BBC that for the first time since the start of the war, delegations from both sides are holding indirect talks in the same building.

Hamas is said to have dropped some of its demands. The deal is said to call for the release of three hostages on the first day of its implementation. Its activation will be followed by the withdrawal of Israeli troops from populated areas in Gaza. After a week, Hamas must release four more hostages and the Jewish state must begin allowing the return of Palestinians displaced from the northern part of the territory. There is no certainty yet on the timeline, but according to US President-elect Donald Trump, the hostage deal and ceasefire in the Strip could be completed by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will present a plan to the Atlantic Council for the reconstruction and governance of Gaza after the war, three US officials told Axios. The plan is based on the creation of a governing mechanism that includes the international community and Arab countries, which could also send troops to Gaza to stabilize the security situation and provide humanitarian aid.

While the finalization of the deal is awaited, the nightmare continues on the ground: Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip overnight claimed at least 18 lives, including four children and six women, one of whom was pregnant.
