"Hamas has committed war crimes", the Israeli ambassador to the UN

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, has asked the United Nations Security Council to condemn Hamas' "relentless terrorist attacks" against Israel.

" Israel has only one request. Hamas' war crimes must be condemned unequivocally. This unimaginable cruelty must be condemned. Israel must be given unwavering support to defend itself. To protect the free world. After the Holocaust, the world swore, 'never again. This very body, the UN, was created on the ashes of the Holocaust. Yet yesterday, we saw how hundreds of Jews were massacred in cold blood. This is a "never again" moment , Erdan said, speaking to reporters ahead of an emergency Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East on Sunday.

" Today, many members of the international community are supporting Israel. But if history has taught us anything, we know that tomorrow may not be the case. The UN, the Security Council, have a very short memory when it comes to Israel ", he added to reporters.

The ambassador said that reports and videos depicting the kidnapping and killing of Israeli citizens by Hamas are "clear and well-documented war crimes."

" What we are witnessing are war crimes, flagrant, barbaric war crimes. Slaughtering civilians, using hostages, taking babies from their mothers. There are no words to describe such cruelty ," he said.

Erdan condemned Hamas as a "genocidal Islamic jihadist terrorist organization", saying it is "no different from ISIS". The Palestinian militant group has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, Israel and other countries.
