A team from the World Health Organization (WHO) has reached al Shifa hospital in northern Gaza. The facility, which is no longer operational, was once the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip which was destroyed by Israeli strikes.
Claiming that Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants were present inside, Israeli troops and aircraft launched an operation that culminated in the encirclement and capture of al Shifa earlier this year.
The WHO chief shared footage of the devastation taken by teams on the ground. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the hospital was now an "empty space of human graves" and most of the buildings in its compound were "extensively destroyed".
" Even restoring minimal functionality in the short term seems unacceptable. An in-depth assessment by a team of engineers is needed to determine if the remaining buildings are safe for future use ," he added.
