The map explains everything, here's what Trump means by territory swaps

The US president appears to be open to discussing Moscow's condition for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, which, as reported by the WSJ, envisages the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas and a "freeze" of the front line in the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions.

Donald Trump said yesterday that a "territorial swap" between Kiev and Moscow is planned, but without providing further details.

That is, it is planned not only the withdrawal of Ukrainian armed forces from Donbass, but also of Russian forces from Sumy, Dnipro and Kharkiv.

At the same time, judging by the strongly negative reaction of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who this morning declared that Ukraine will not give up a single centimeter of territory, this development will be particularly unfavorable for Kiev.

If the internal information of the Western media is correct and there is a consent from the US to the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbass, then we can talk about the transfer of at least ten cities to Russia: Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkovka, Konstantinovka, Pokrovsk, Mirnograd, Rodinskoye, Doborolye, Liman and Seversk. This corresponds to about 25% of the territory of the Donetsk region or almost 7 thousand square kilometers (marked in red on the map).

Map of the front in Ukraine. In bright red is the Donetsk region, which is claimed by Moscow but controlled by Kiev.

Most of these cities are vast, fortified areas of Ukrainian troops, which have been preparing for defense for years.

A territorial exchange would signal an advance of 80 kilometers west for Russian forces.

At the same time, Russia controls 1,175 square kilometers of territory in the Kharkiv region and another 207 square kilometers in the Sumy region (marked in blue on the map), as well as an insignificant area in the Dnieper region.

That is, even if there is an exchange of these regions with Donbass, this will be a clearly less positive outcome for Kiev.
