Cuban authorities call US accusations against former president for shooting down two civilian planes 30 years ago "false"

Thousands of Cubans gathered on Friday in front of the United States Embassy in Havana to protest Washington's decision to indict former President Raul Castro over the shooting down of two civilian airliners three decades ago, Reuters reported.

The pro-government demonstration began just after sunrise on the Havana waterfront, days after Cuban officials publicly came out in defense of the historic figure of the Cuban revolution.

Raul Castro, 94, did not attend the rally.

Cuban MP Gerardo Hernandez, known in Cuba as a national hero and former intelligence agent, conveyed a message of thanks to the Cuban people and international supporters for the solidarity shown.

During the protest, participants waved flags and chanted slogans such as "Long live Raul!" and "Homeland or death!".

The rally was also attended by President Miguel Diaz-Canel and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, as well as several members of the Castro family, including Raul Castro's daughter Mariela Castro, son Alejandro Castro, and grandson Raul Rodriguez Castro.

Rodriguez Castro, known in Cuba by the nicknames “Raulito” and “El Cangrejo” (“The Crab”), often serves as his grandfather’s bodyguard. Last week he met with CIA Director John Ratcliffe during a rare visit by a top US intelligence official to Havana.

In a statement to Cuban state media after the protest, Mariela Castro said her father is in good condition.

"Raul is very well, very calm, like an old guerrilla; he observes and smiles. He always said: 'Nobody will catch me alive; they will catch me fighting,'" she declared.

The Cuban government claims that the murder indictment filed Wednesday against Raul Castro is based on "fabricated" charges and aims to create a justification for intervention against the island, while the administration of President Donald Trump seeks to exert pressure on the government in Cuba.
