The man who was hailed as the "Bondi Hero" after intervening to stop one of the perpetrators of the armed attack on Bondi Beach in Australia has received a check worth more than 2.5 million Australian dollars (about 1.65 million US dollars), raised through an online donation campaign.
Ahmed al Ahmed became a symbol of courage when, after hiding behind parked cars, he attacked one of the gunmen from behind, grabbed his gun and knocked him to the ground. During the attempt, he was wounded by a second assailant's gunfire and is currently recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery.
The symbolic check was delivered to his hospital bed by Zachery Dereniowski, a social media influencer and co-organizer of the GoFundMe page. More than 43,000 people from around the world contributed to the fundraiser, including billionaire Bill Ackman, who donated almost 100,000 Australian dollars.
In his statement, Ahmed thanked donors and called for human unity and the protection of life.
The Australian Prime Minister and local leaders have visited him in the hospital, describing his act as an extraordinary example of bravery.
Last Sunday's attack on Bondi Beach left 15 dead and dozens injured, as Australian authorities continue their investigation into the tragic event.
