Investigators probing the cause of the plane crash in Ahmedabad with 242 passengers on board will search for the plane's black boxes.
The devices keep data about the flight, including what the pilots say to each other in the cockpit. They also include information like altitude and speed.
There are two types of flight recorders: the flight data recorder stores the history of the last flight by recording dozens of parameters collected several times a second; the cockpit voice recorder stores the history of the last sounds in the cockpit, including the pilots' conversation.
Black boxes are usually kept in the tail of the plane, which is thought to be the part that is usually least damaged in the event of a crash.
Indian newspaper The Hindustan Times says one of the black boxes from Air India Flight 171 has been found, while the search for the second is ongoing.
