An event that has shocked public opinion in the Czech Republic is being investigated by local authorities, after the discovery of the body parts of a newborn baby in the yard of a house near the border with Germany.
According to Czech media, police have arrested a 35-year-old woman accused of killing her newborn child. Investigators are also looking into the possibility that she may have fed the baby's remains to dogs to cover her tracks.
The incident came to light last week in the small town of Kynšperk nad Ohří, with about 5,000 inhabitants, about 20 kilometers from the German border.
According to published information, the 35-year-old's mother-in-law discovered a hand and part of a lifeless baby's arm in a plastic bag in the backyard of the house where the couple lived with the husband's parents.
After the report, authorities immediately launched a search. Dozens of police officers and rescue teams searched the area and surrounding trash cans, but were unable to find the rest of the baby's body.
Police announced that the 35-year-old woman faces charges of murder under particularly serious circumstances.
According to the Czech newspaper Krimi-Plzen, investigators are seriously considering the scenario that the baby's remains were fed to dogs. This hypothesis is considered one of the possible explanations for the absence of other body parts.
The motives for the incident remain unclear. Authorities suspect that the woman gave birth secretly and then took the baby's life.
Residents of the area stated that her pregnancy was obvious during the last few months, but then she was no longer seen with a swollen belly and a baby never appeared in the apartment.
The local community has reacted with sadness and anger. On Monday, dozens of residents laid flowers and lit candles near the scene in memory of the baby.
