"The entry of the Balkans into the EU requires calm", Mattarella

The entry of the entire Balkan region into the EU requires calm.

The Italian President, Sergio Mattarella, during the greeting ceremony of the Italian contingents engaged with the command mission of the Italian KFOR in Kosovo, emphasized the delicate situation in which the Western Balkans is located, especially, the Kosovo-Serbia clashes. Mattarella declared that calm in the region is the only possibility for the Balkans to join the EU.

" The entry of the entire Balkan region into the EU requires calmness. For 25 years, KFOR has dedicated itself to this mission with dedication, I follow it carefully and I see the sometimes intentional hot climate at the local level that artificially complicates the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. Your mission to keep it alive is essential ," Mattarella said.

Furthermore, the Italian president raised concern about the risk of intervention by external forces to destabilize Kosovo, which would be fatal for the region if it were not for the presence of KFOR.

"The risk of intervention from outside the Balkans is very high. It is clear and easy - adds the head of state - to compare the successful result of the mission. In recent years, without KFOR, there would have been outbreaks of violence that would have destroyed the country" , said the Italian president.

In the end, Mattarella expressed gratitude to the Italian contingents engaged with the KFOR command mission, for their work in maintaining stability in the international arena.

" My goal is to express gratitude for what has been achieved in the missions. It is an opportunity for me to express how important the work of the Armed Forces is for the Republic, the service rendered to the national community, the great contribution to Security. This is also an opportunity to remember with a regretful thought the fallen in the service part of the legacy of the memory of the Armed Forces ", he concluded.
