A 37-year-old man, who is serving a sentence in Burg prison, near the city of Magdeburg, Germany, is suspected of killing his wife who went to visit him in prison. According to what German newspapers report, the woman was found dead after a conversation with her husband, which took place yesterday afternoon, Thursday, April 3.
The prosecution maintains maximum confidentiality on this matter, but according to information provided by a member of the investigation team to Bild, the 35-year-old's body was found after 2:00 p.m. in one of the rooms used for long-term meetings with prisoners, usually for marital meetings or to spend time with young children. These are special rooms, different from the classic rooms or rooms where interviews take place.
Before meetings, officers perform all the ritual checks, but as local media confirm, the room is not constantly monitored, even to allow the prisoners some privacy.
Stendal police have launched investigations to clarify the incident.
An autopsy of the woman's body has been scheduled for today, Friday, April 4, an examination that could reveal the cause of death.
At the moment, the prosecutor's office has not provided further information on the dynamics of the crime or the possible motive. The results of the autopsy examination are expected early next week. The Burg prison is the largest in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. It was inaugurated in 2009 and can accommodate 650 prisoners. The facility is designed to house long-term prisoners, including those with high security.
