Parts of the western coast of Sakhalin Island and the mainland regions of Primorsk and Khabarovsk, which are located near Japan on Russia's Pacific coast, are under threat of a tsunami, state news agency TASS reported today, citing officials, Reuters reports.
A strong 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck central Japan today, prompting a tsunami warning and evacuation advice.
Russian media quoted authorities in the port city of Vladivostok in the Primorsk region as saying that anyone sailing in local waters should "immediately return to shore".
TASS quoted authorities in the Sakhalin and Khabarovsk regions as saying the wave would not be life-threatening.
TASS also cited the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, which denied earlier reports that the evacuation of the population from dangerous areas in Sakhalin was underway.
