What is driving support for former President Donald Trump despite his legal

A possible showdown for the leadership of the White House between the President of the United States Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump would be very strong, revealed a recent poll by the news agency Reuters and that of research Ipsos, even why the former president is facing four criminal cases related to efforts to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election and illegal possession of classified documents.

Mr. Trump leads the presidential race among Republicans with a large lead, the poll conducted from December 5 to 11 showed.

Mr. Trump's strong support, despite his legal challenges, has stymied his opponents, but Lehigh University political science professor Anthony DiMaggio says social issues, particularly immigration, reflect his base.

"Poll after poll, year after year, we notice that there are certain causes that connect more strongly with people who say they support Donald Trump, or are willing to vote for him. And mostly it's social issues. It's issues like immigration and border concerns," said Mr. Anthony DiMaggio.

Asked which candidate handles these issues better, in a Reuters poll, 54% of respondents said they agreed that "immigration is making life more difficult for Americans born in the US", almost the same percentage, respondents say Mr. Trump is the best candidate to address these issues.

"As long as they (Democrats) let in, I believe 15 or 16 million people in the country, we have a lot of work to do. They are poisoning the blood of our country. This is what they are doing."

"We have seen many times in the news headlines his statements that immigrants are poisoning the blood of the country. He has said it many times and many experts have been concerned about such statements. But he knows such issues drive the base. He's smart, he reads the polls well, and he understands what his supporters want," added Professor Anthony DiMaggio.

Arlie Russell Hochschild, a professor at the University of California, says that Mr. Trump has high support among voters in Republican-leaning states who feel disenfranchised and left behind economically since globalization.

"His speeches are sometimes harsh and hostile. This rhetoric targets those people who feel neglected and belittled", says Mrs. Hochschild.

"I am facing 4 legal challenges because I questioned the rigged elections. We have no doubts about that election, we know the result. We know very well".

Duke University history professor Adriane Lentz-Smith says the former president's ardent supporters aim to be rich and successful, like the persona he cultivated, and identify with the former president when he claims he is being judged without him. right.

"Mr. Trump's supporters identify with him, even when he is in charge and when he faces challenges. So his supporters think they can be like him. This gives them the feeling of being connected to him, because in turn they also feel that they are being hit, just like him. So, Mr. Trump enjoys their support in both forms."

Professor Anthony DiMaggio explains that another factor present in Mr. Trump's rhetoric is a deep distrust of certain institutions, such as Congress, some judges and the media. According to him, Mr. Trump's claims of a conspiracy by the government and the media prompt many of his supporters to ignore negative news about the former president.

However, about 31% of Republican respondents said they would not vote for Mr. Trump if he were convicted of a crime.

Mr Trump himself has denied any allegations of wrongdoing. /VOA
