A devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck central Japan today, prompting mass evacuations along much of the country's coastline.
According to foreign media, more than 20 earthquakes over 4.0 magnitude struck the country shortly after 4:00 p.m. local time, and the first waves of the tsunami have begun to hit the northern coast of central Japan.
The country's meteorological agency reported that the first large waves hit the port of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture at 4:21 p.m. local time, with more expected in the coming minutes and hours. And Japan is now bracing for waves of up to 5 meters that could come later today.
Several major highways were closed, the road operator said, and rail transport was also suspended in some places. Cracked asphalt and destroyed houses can be seen from the footage.
