New episode in the confrontation between the American president and the Italian prime minister

"She is no longer the same person and Italy will never be the same country," Trump added, saying he had not been in contact with Meloni "for a long time."
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani responded from Berlin to Trump's statements, emphasizing "I believe that it must always be taken into account that a relationship of alliance and friendship, such as the one between Italy and the United States, must be based on trust and respect. Something we have always done."
But in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, US President Donald Trump said he was "shocked" by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. "I can't imagine. I'm shocked by her. I thought she was brave, but I was wrong," Trump said.
The US president's comments come after the Italian prime minister defended Pope Leo XIV during a remote debate between the Pope and Trump about the war in Iran. Trump's comments about the Pope were "unacceptable," according to Meloni.
"I have expressed and continue to express my solidarity with Pope Leo," the Italian prime minister said, adding, "Frankly, I would not feel comfortable in a society where religious leaders do whatever political leaders say. Not in this part of the world."
