The Ministry of Health, which is controlled by Hamas in Gaza, announced today that the number of victims in Rafah, as a result of an Israeli attack on Sunday, has reached 45, half of whom are women and children. The Israeli army announced that it struck a base housing senior members of the militant group.
The attack was condemned by world leaders, who called for the implementation of the International Court of Justice order for Israel to end the attack on Rafah.
The United States reacted on Monday to the attack, urging Israel to take measures to protect civilians, after the "horrific scenes" from the military attack in Rafah.
"Israel enjoys the right to oppose Hamas, and we understand that this attack has killed two senior Hamas terrorists who are responsible for attacks against Israeli civilians," a National Security Council spokesman said. "But, as we have emphasized, Israel must take all measures to protect civilians."
"We are in constant contact with the Israeli military and our partners on the ground to assess what happened," the American spokesman said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the "tragic mistake" that had been made after an Israeli attack burned down a tent camp housing displaced Palestinians and killed dozens.
"Despite our efforts not to harm innocent civilians, a tragic mistake happened last night," he declared. "We are investigating the incident and will come up with a conclusion."
Eyewitness Mohammed Abuassa, who ran to the scene, told the Associated Press news agency that rescue teams "pulled people out in an unbearable condition."
"We took out children who were torn to pieces. We took out young and old. The fire in the camp was unimaginable."
According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, of the 45 dead, at least 12 were women, eight children and three elderly. Three bodies were burned beyond identification.
Relatives of dozens of Palestinians killed in an Israeli airstrike, which hit the tents and temporary settlements of displaced people, buried their relatives today.
"We have suffered enough. We are unable to identify our loved ones. We can't identify them," says a woman while wailing next to the corpses.
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, the neighborhood hit overnight was marked as a "humanitarian zone" by Israel and was not among the neighborhoods from which Israel has ordered residents to evacuate.
Footage from the scene showed the extensive damage caused by the attack.
