Cellphone footage shows the moment when several citizens immobilized the man who had just hit pedestrians.
Traffic cameras captured the car's arrival on Via Emilia from behind. The vehicle was seen zigzagging and climbing onto the pavement, where it hit pedestrians in the restricted traffic area.
Another camera recorded the incident from the front, showing more clearly the action that, according to the investigation so far, appears to be intentional.
The car quickly entered the road, accelerated and hit pedestrians, before stopping at a store window.
A group of bystanders then chased the driver as he fled. The footage shows Luca Signorelli, one of the witnesses who was not hit by the vehicle, grabbing him from behind. He stops him and knocks him down, but Samir El Koudiri manages to overpower him and knock him to the ground. At that moment, the knife appears.
According to Italian media, El Koudiri attempted to stab him several times in the chest and head. The blade grazed Signorelli, causing minor wounds. He managed to grab the aggressor by the wrist where he was holding the knife and blocked his movement.
Meanwhile, two other people came to his aid. The three managed to stop and immobilize the aggressor until the Italian State Police arrived. According to reports, the intervention lasted a total of 11 seconds.
The mayor of Modena, Massimo Mezzetti, said on Instagram that Italian President Sergio Mattarella had called him to express his closeness to the injured and to thank the citizens who intervened.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the event "very serious" and thanked citizens and law enforcement for their intervention.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called Luca Signorelli a "hero," saying he intervened to stop the violence and protect the people present.
