Search and rescue teams struggled to pull bodies from the rubble of homes destroyed by earthquakes in Afghanistan this week.

Survivors are facing a bleak future with global aid agencies warning of dwindling funds for food, shelter and medicine.

Search operations continued late Wednesday in the earthquake-hit eastern mountainous areas as more bodies were recovered, the Taliban administration said, adding that the death toll had passed 1,457, but exact numbers had not yet been compiled.

The first magnitude 6 earthquake, one of the deadliest in Afghanistan in recent years, caused widespread damage and destruction in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces on Sunday when it struck at a shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles).

A second 5.5-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday caused panic and disrupted rescue efforts after sliding rocks down mountains and blocking roads to villages in remote areas.

About 3,400 others were injured and more than 6,700 homes were destroyed, authorities said. The United Nations has warned that the death toll could rise as people are still trapped under rubble and time is running out for survivors, Reuters reports.

Entire families were wiped out in several villages in Kunar province. Survivors, desperately searching for family members, sifted through the rubble, carried bodies on woven stretchers and dug graves with picks as they waited for help.
