Attack in Washington, Trump: I wanted to continue the speech but the Secret
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, First Lady Melania Trump and President Donald Trump attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C., Saturday evening.

US President Donald Trump said he and First Lady Melania Trump are fine after the shooting that occurred at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

"She's very well. I'm fine. And it was a very sad evening in many ways. And it was also an evening where a lot of people came together ," Trump told Fox News on Sunday in a phone interview.

Trump also praised the "excellent" response of the Secret Service and law enforcement, who apprehended the suspect. The president called on Democrats in Congress to vote to end the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.

"And the Secret Service and all of the law enforcement was, I think they were brilliant, you know? You can always be weak, they can be very critical of everything else, but they were brilliant. They stopped it right away. And there was no game being played, I can tell you that... These were strong, determined people who should be paid. You know, this is a group that is not being paid. I think maybe they will be let off a little bit now because I thought, I thought last night there was great talent. Bravery, but talent," Trump said as he blamed Democrats for the delay in their salaries.

The president further added that the perpetrator had a "manifesto" that included anti-Christian writings, adding that a family member of the suspect complained to law enforcement. Trump, who spoke during an interview on Fox News this morning about the shooting, added that the suspect in the attack was a very troubled guy.

"When you read his manifesto, he hates Christians, that's for sure. He hates Christians, a hatred, and I think his sister, or his brother, were actually complaining about it. You know, they were even complaining to law enforcement. So he was a very troubled guy. Well, they have some pretty good information. He had a lot of hatred in his heart for a long time. ... It was a religious thing, it was very anti-Christian. And I don't know if you realized, as soon as the manifesto came out ," the president said.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche also acknowledged in an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" this morning that the suspect had "some writings."

Trump said he wanted to continue his speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner after the shooting, but added that according to US Secret Service protocol, he had to leave.

"I really wanted to do it that night. Even though we stayed up late at night, we did the right thing and went back to the White House, held a press conference and explained what happened," Trump told Fox News Sunday in a phone interview. "I really wanted to, but the protocol was no and, you know, as soon as those doors opened, that room was sealed. We can't let these criminals and these really bad people change the course of events in our country," Trump added.
