Gun attack in Washington/Did Trump's bodyguards react correctly and why did

The bodyguards' response to the armed attack at the White House Correspondents' Dinner is under the microscope of top security experts. Two professionals have analyzed the incident step by step, explaining the reasons why JD Vance was evacuated first and then Donald Trump.

The head of security at Costamare Shipping Co SA, Panagiotis Sofronas, starts the analysis from the prevention phase, emphasizing that this is a high-risk activity, comparable to events categorized as NSSE in the United States. According to him, the fact that the perpetrator managed to penetrate the internal security levels indicates serious operational gaps.

"There was insufficient reinforcement of the external perimeter and poor access control throughout the hotel," he says, adding that the fact that the perpetrator was staying at the hotel and had a shotgun, handgun and knife with him indicates "insufficient verification of guests and lack of control with monitoring lists."

He also identifies problems in crowd management: " due to panic and uncontrolled reactions there was a partial lack of a structured evacuation plan."

However, he appreciates the operational response: "The first line of security was surprised, but reacted immediately and neutralized the perpetrator, while the Secret Service recorded "rapid engagement and neutralization / isolation, before the perpetrator entered the hall."

He also highlights the way the president's protection team responded: "rapid removal from the scene, excellent coverage of the president, and transfer to a secure area within the building."

Regarding the evacuation of JD Vance before Trump, he explains: "They didn't want to remove two high-value targets from the same place at the same time."

On the other hand, Pentagongroup CEO Nikos Aravantinos presents a more critical assessment of the first moments after the shooting.

"We are noticing a dangerous delay in protecting and immediately removing the president ," he said, adding that "as the first shots are heard, there is no one near the president to instruct him."

According to him, "the first bodyguard approaches after several shots are heard and stands behind the president", while "the emergency team arrived scattered and late".

"The president was visible, which is prohibited," he emphasizes, adding that in such situations the target must be completely covered until transferred to a safe area.

He also dwells on the reaction of those present: "One looked at the other without knowing what to do ," linking this to the lack of clear instructions and evacuation plan.

Regarding protocols, he emphasizes: " It could be a distraction and the real danger lies elsewhere."

Regarding the evacuation order, he acknowledges that avoiding simultaneous departures is standard practice, but adds that "Vance's faster departure shows better organization of his security team," while for Trump's team he emphasizes that "there are delays."

In conclusion, the analysis of the two experts highlights a mixed picture: gaps in prevention and criticism of the first moments, but an operational response that avoided escalating the situation.
