Faced with criticism, Israel reminds the world of Hamas attacks

As voices critical of Israel's attacks on Gaza mount, Israeli leaders are working to make sure the world doesn't forget the horror of Hamas' attacks on Israeli civilians, including the elderly and children, that sparked the current war.

As protests spread around the world this week, Israeli officials invited international media reporters to visit the scene of the massacres and see first-hand the efforts of forensic experts to identify the hundreds of victims. VOA correspondent Yan Boechat was among them and brings us this chronicle from Tel Aviv. We warn viewers that the chronicle has serious images.

Injured Palestinians are rushed to receive medical aid as the death toll in Gaza continues to rise after two weeks of unrelenting attacks. At the same time, pressure on Israel is mounting and in various countries of the Middle East, North Africa and most of the world, protests have erupted demanding an end to the violence.

In Berlin, tensions flared during anti-Israel protests that resulted in the arrest of 174 people.

Meanwhile, in the West Bank, Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian protesters. Several Palestinians were killed during the clashes.

As international criticism mounts, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening.

But Israeli authorities are determined to make sure the world does not forget the shocking events of October 7, when Hamas militants attacked Israeli communities along the Gaza border, killing 1,400 people.

"This is the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv. Behind me, work is being done to identify the bodies of the people who were killed last Saturday. So far, experts have identified more than 500 people, but some of the bodies are in such a bad condition that it will be impossible to identify them,” said VOA correspondent Yan Boechat from the scene.

Journalists were given access to the autopsy rooms, where the bodies of the victims are being examined. Burnt remains are scattered everywhere and doctors are working to identify them.

"We are trying to find out how many people we can identify from these mortal remains. In this pile, we found separate pieces of the lower jaw - we found three of them. Man has only two, so from this case we can say that there are at least two individuals among these mortal remains."

In the southern part of Israel, near the Gaza Strip, journalists were sent to visit the settlement of Be'eri, one of the communities where the wounds of the Hamas massacre are still fresh.

The destruction, but also the motorcycles and weapons of the Hamas militants, remain intact.

Israel also had an important sign of international support after the visit of US President Joe Biden. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visited Israel on Thursday and pledged support, as well as an offer to broker a deal to send humanitarian aid to Gaza.

But while these diplomatic efforts are ongoing, Israel's warplanes have continued to bomb Gaza. The authorities there are updating every hour the growing number of those killed, which has already reached several thousand./VOA
