Lord Mandelson resigns from Labour over Epstein scandal: 'I don't want
Lord Mandelson

Lord Mandelson will be called to give evidence to Congress over his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, following his resignation from the Labour Party.

Sources close to the US House of Representatives oversight committee, which has led the release of millions of files held by the government on the paedophile financier, said it was ready to ask the Labor Party colleague to testify in Washington.

It is believed that Lord Mandelson, who was dismissed as British ambassador to Washington in September over revelations about his relationship with Epstein, may have important information about his accomplices and enablers of his crimes.

Lord Mandelson is under renewed scrutiny after documents released by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) on Friday revealed the extent of his relationship with Epstein, who committed suicide in 2019.

In an exchange in December 2009, when Lord Mandelson was business secretary, he said he was “trying very hard” to change the Labour Party’s policy on bankers’ bonuses following demands from Epstein.

Other emails show them discussing arrangements for Lord Mandelson to stay at Epstein's homes following the banker's conviction for child prostitution in 2008, while images also show Lord Mandelson in his underwear next to a woman in a white dress.

On Sunday evening, Lord Mandelson announced that he had resigned from the Labour Party, saying he did not want to be "embarrassed any further" over his links to Epstein.

Lord Mandelson said he had written to Hollie Ridley, the Labour Party's General Secretary, to tell her he was resigning from the party.

In his letter, he states, "This weekend I have been further connected to the understandable anger surrounding Jeffrey Epstein and I feel sad and upset about it."

"The false allegations that he made financial payments to me 20 years ago, and of which I have no knowledge or recollection, must be investigated by me. While I do this, I do not want to cause further embarrassment to the Labour Party and for this reason I am withdrawing from membership of the party," he said.

Lord Mandelson said that "I want to take this opportunity to reiterate my apology to women and girls whose voices should have been heard long ago."

"I have dedicated my life to the values and success of the Labour Party and in making my decision, I believe I am acting in its best interests," he said.

Following the latest revelations, The Telegraph writes that Lord Mandelson will not return to the House of Lords.

In what would constitute an effective retirement from political life, the former Labour Party spin doctor does not plan to end his current leave of absence from the House of Lords, avoiding the possibility of further disciplinary action over his links to the paedophile financier.

Congress cannot compel testimony from foreigners, nor issue subpoenas to foreign nationals living abroad, meaning it has no legal obligation to respond.
