The Crown Princess of Norway has been embroiled in another scandal, as newly discovered files show the extensive contacts she had with the late Jeffrey Epstein, who was serving a sentence for child sexual abuse but committed suicide in prison.

From the latest documents released by the Department of Justice, it turns out that the crown princess, Mette-Marit, is mentioned 1,000 times.

The files include dozens of emails exchanged between the two, showing that they were in contact from 2011 to 2014, Norwegian daily VG reported.

Mette-Marit married the future king of Norway in 2001.

The revelations come at a delicate time for the royal family. The rape trial of Mette-Marit's son, Marius Borg Høiby, is set to begin on Tuesday. He was fathered by a relationship before she married Crown Prince Haakon.

Høiby faces 38 charges, including the alleged rape of four women, as well as charges of sexual assault and drug-related offenses. If convicted, he could face up to 16 years in prison. Høiby has denied the most serious charges, including sexual abuse.

On Saturday, Mette-Marit spoke about her relationship with Epstein, who killed himself in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex crimes against minors.

"I showed poor judgment and deeply regret having had any contact with Epstein. It is simply disgraceful," she said in a statement released by the royal palace.

Norwegian media attention this weekend focused on numerous emails the princess exchanged with Epstein, years after he pleaded guilty to charges that included soliciting prostitution from a minor in Florida.

Emails included in the dossier show that the two were close, with Mette-Marit telling Epstein that he "triggers my mind" in one message and calling him "soft-hearted" and "a sweetheart" in others.

In 2012, Mette-Marit told Epstein that he was “very charming” and asked him if it was “inappropriate for a mother to suggest two naked women holding a surfboard to my 15-year-old son?”

Weeks earlier, she and Epstein had exchanged emails about him “looking for women” in Paris. She replied that the French capital was “good for adultery” and added that “Scandinavians are better material for women.”

In another, she thanked Epstein for the flowers he sent her when she was feeling unwell, closing with "Love, Mrs."

The exchanges regularly mentioned plans to meet up, while files show she also stayed at his home in Palm Beach, Florida, for four days in 2013 when Epstein was not there.

Inclusion in the file does not imply a violation.

In her statement on Saturday, Mette-Marit, 52, expressed "deep sympathy and solidarity" with Epstein's victims and said she was responsible "for not checking Epstein's records more closely and for not understanding the kind of person he was quickly enough."

However, the files include a 2011 exchange in which Mette-Marit told Epstein she had “Googled him,” adding that “he didn’t look very good” along with a smiley emoji. The email did not specify what she had found during her online search.

The palace said Mette-Marit had ended written contact with Epstein in 2014, as she felt he was "trying to use his relationship with the crown princess as a means of influencing other people".

As her son's seven-week trial begins in Oslo, the royal couple are not expected to attend. Haakon has told reporters that Mette-Marit will be away on a private trip during that period.

Høiby does not hold a royal title and is outside the line of royal succession. Earlier this year, the Norwegian royal court addressed the court in a statement, saying: “It is up to the courts to consider this matter and make a decision. We have no further comment.” /Pamphlet/
