President Donald Trump signaled on Sunday that his administration is ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia.
" Are you ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia? " a reporter asked the president as he left the White House to head to the US Open in New York.
"Yes, I am," the president replied.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed on Thursday the importance of increasing pressure on Moscow and on all countries that trade with Russia.
"The Russian economy is under pressure and all countries that trade with Russia are under pressure, and we will continue to do so," Zelensky said, adding that secondary sanctions and special trade tariffs could help.
CNN has previously reported that Trump was growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress on peace and was considering how involved he should be in brokering a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
Meanwhile, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine said Sunday that Russia is "escalating" after its largest airstrike of the war overnight.
“The danger in any war is escalation. Russia appears to be escalating with the largest attack of the war hitting the UKR Cabinet offices in Kiev. History shows that events can escalate out of control through such actions. That is why President Trump is working to stop this war. The attack was not a signal that Russia wants to end this war diplomatically ,” General Keith Kellogg posted on X.
