Eight countries in the Middle East where American troops are stationed have been hit by Iranian attacks at an almost incalculable cost.
At least 16 US military installations in 8 countries have been damaged by Iranian attacks, making up the bulk of US positions in the Middle East, according to a new CNN investigation.
The losses include high-value targets, which raises questions about the US presence in the region.
Among the Iranian targets were multi-million dollar aircraft, such as a Boeing E3 Century, whose production has been halted and which was the US "eye" in the Persian Gulf with its current value estimated at half a billion euros. Critical radar systems and telecommunications facilities, difficult to replace and essential for air defense, were also hit.
As CNN's correspondent for US allies in the region points out, the dilemma is that Iran's show of force makes the US presence in the region even more necessary. But the new reality is that facilities that once seemed like "impregnable fortresses" now stand as "immobile targets."
The report concludes with the question, has the American presence in the Middle East, which once functioned as a "protective shield", become its Achilles heel?
