Washington Post poll: Most Americans say war on Iran was a mistake

A 61 percent majority of Americans say it was a mistake for the United States to use military force against Iran, according to a Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll released today.

As the Washington Post notes, that’s on par with the 59 percent who called the Iraq war a mistake in a Post/ABC poll in May 2006. A 1971 Gallup poll found that roughly six in 10 Americans said the same about the Vietnam War.

Roughly nine in 10 Democrats now call military action against Iran a mistake, as do 71 percent of independents and 19 percent of Republicans.

There are mixed opinions on America’s next steps, with 48 percent of the public saying the U.S. should make a peace deal with Iran even if it results in a worse deal for the U.S., and 46 percent saying the U.S. should push Iran for a better deal, even if it means resuming military action.

On the economy: The poll also finds that 23 percent, roughly a quarter of Americans, say they are falling behind financially, up from 17 percent in February. Another 52 percent say they have enough to maintain their standard of living, with 24 percent saying they are getting ahead. On

the impact of high gas prices, the poll found that 44 percent said they have reduced the number of trips they take by car, 42 percent said they have cut back on household spending, and 34 percent said they have changed their travel or vacation plans. Half of Americans say they expect gasoline prices to get worse over the next year, while only 21 percent say they expect them to get better.
