On May 9, the Kremlin will celebrate the historic victory over Nazi Germany with a huge military parade. But this year, unlike in previous years, the traditional military parade will take place without tanks and missiles.
The display of military equipment has been canceled due to the "operational situation," the Defense Ministry announced in the Russian capital.
"Against the backdrop of the terrorist threat, measures are naturally being taken to minimize the risk," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained regarding the lack of tanks.
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, however, sees a connection between the organized military parade and the still fiercely contested front: the fact that the victory parade is taking place without military equipment for the first time in years is no coincidence, Ukrainska Pravda quotes. According to her, "this says a lot about how the war is going for Russia." According to the Estonian leader, it is becoming increasingly clear that Russia is not achieving its objectives. She added that "the grim figures from the battlefield show that Russia is losing a record number of soldiers." This statement is supported by the latest data from the Ukrainian General Staff.
The planned parade will see thousands of officer cadets march to Red Square. The televised event will show the deployment of Russian soldiers from all branches of the armed forces, including those fighting in Ukraine and at nuclear force command posts.
Russia traditionally celebrates its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II on May 9. The military parade in front of President Vladimir Putin on Red Square also served to demonstrate Russia's power with intercontinental ballistic missiles and modern tanks. However, the scale of military equipment on display has varied in previous years. No equipment was displayed in 2007.
Another commemorative event is the so-called Immortal Regiment, in which Russians carry portraits of relatives killed in the war.
This year, the event is planned to take place at a regional level, depending on the security situation, either as a physical march or online.
