Iran has appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr to the post of secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, according to the Tasnim news agency, following the assassination of Ali Larijani last week.
The announcement was officially made by Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy head of public relations at the Iranian presidency.
Zolghadr, born in 1955, is a retired commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and currently serves as secretary and member of the Council for Determining the Regime's Interests. During his long career, he has served in a number of senior state positions, gaining experience in strategic and internal security matters.
In the past, he was deputy head of the justice system for strategic issues, social security and crime prevention, and held the post of deputy interior minister for security during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Officials believe that his experience in military and government positions makes him suitable for coordinating the country's national security policy, in a period of heightened instability in the region.
The appointment comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, with both sides engaged in a wider confrontation involving missile attacks and strategic military operations.
The Supreme National Security Council is a key body for drafting and coordinating the country's defense and strategic policies, while the secretary plays a central role in advising the president and in linking military, intelligence structures, and government institutions.
Zolghadr's appointment is seen as a continuation of a leadership line that relies on figures with strong military and strategic experience. According to the same sources, the transfer of powers from Larijani to Zolghadr takes effect immediately, with the Iranian presidency confirming the appointment through official announcements and state media.
