Iranian state media has confirmed the death of Ali Larijani, one of the country's most important security figures, ending the uncertainty that followed Israel's initial announcement of his elimination.

Earlier in the day, Israeli authorities said Larijani had been killed in an overnight strike, but the initial reaction from Iran was denial. Just minutes after the news broke, a handwritten message purporting to be from Larijani was posted on social media, aiming to create the impression that he was still alive.

The message was attributed to Larijan and paid tribute to Iranian sailors killed in an earlier US attack on the warship "Dena" on March 4. Its publication was interpreted as an attempt to refute reports of his death.

However, the later confirmation by Iranian state media marks the official admission of the loss of a key figure in the country's security establishment. The development comes shortly after Tehran also confirmed the killing of Basij force commander Gholamreza Soleimani.

Larijani was considered one of the most influential figures in the political and security system of the Islamic Republic. He had a long career, starting as a commander in the Revolutionary Guard during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, before moving on to important political positions.

Over the decades, he held some of the country's highest positions, including heading the state broadcaster, the role of chief nuclear negotiator, and the post of speaker of parliament for 12 years, until 2020.

In 2004, he was appointed advisor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on security matters, further strengthening his influence in Iran's strategic decision-making.

Larijani's elimination constitutes a significant blow to Iran's leadership structures and further deepens the crisis at the highest levels of power, at a time when the country is under strong military and political pressure.
