The Iraqi capital, Baghdad, has been rocked by a series of explosions near the United States embassy, signaling the spread of the US-Israeli war against Iran beyond its borders.
According to reports from Al Jazeera, several explosive drones were directed towards the Green Zone, the most fortified area of the city where the US embassy is located. Two of them were neutralized by air defense systems, while another disappeared from radar.
Security sources confirmed that at least three more drones targeted a US diplomatic facility near Baghdad International Airport, activating C-RAM air defense systems.
Explosions were heard in several parts of the city, while debris from aerial objects fell in various areas, causing material damage, including at a university complex in the al-Dura neighborhood.
A fire was also reported near the Central Bank in the al-Jadriyah district, after fragments of an aerial object fell near the building's main entrance.
There have been no reports of casualties so far, but the attacks mark a significant escalation of violence between US forces and armed groups in Iraq that are backed by Iran.
The events come just a day after four people were killed in an airstrike on a facility used by the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a structure that includes several groups linked to Tehran and which, according to reports, also housed Iranian advisers.
