Former FBI Director James Comey was interviewed by the United States Secret Service on Friday regarding an Instagram post that has sparked strong reactions from Trump administration officials and Republicans, who consider it a possible call for violence against President Donald Trump.
The post, which has now been deleted, featured a photo of seashells arranged to form the numbers "86 47," accompanied by the caption "Beautiful shell formation on my walk on the beach." Critics say the term "86" is slang that can mean "get rid of" or in some contexts "murder," while the "47" refers to the fact that Donald Trump is the 47th president of the United States. This has led to accusations that the post could be interpreted as a veiled threat.
President Trump, in an interview with Fox News, dismissed Comey's explanations, saying: "He knew exactly what he meant. A child understands what he meant. If you're the director of the FBI and you don't know what he means, that means murder."
Senior administration officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, have condemned the post. Noem confirmed that the Secret Service is investigating the matter, while Gabbard went further, saying that Comey should be imprisoned.
Comey, for his part, said in a later Instagram post that he had not intended to incite violence and that he had removed the photo after realizing that some were associating it with violence.
" It hadn't occurred to me, but I oppose any kind of violence, so I deleted the post ," he said.
The Secret Service, through spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, stated that the agency "rigorously investigates anything that could be considered a potential threat against protected persons" and that they are treating the matter seriously. The FBI, now led by Kash Patel, has confirmed that it is providing support to the investigation.
The incident comes at a time when relations between Comey and Trump remain strained, since Comey's firing in 2017 during the FBI's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election. The Secret Service investigation is expected to clarify the true intentions of the post and whether it posed a real threat.
