Tornadoes hit US, at least 16 dead

At least 16 people have died after powerful tornadoes hit two US states, Kentucky and Missouri, causing a major natural disaster. Authorities warn that the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations continue in intensity.

Nine deaths have been confirmed in Kentucky, while seven people have died in Missouri, five of them in the city of St. Louis - one of the hardest-hit areas. In Laurel County, southeastern Kentucky, the tornado appeared violently in the early hours of Saturday morning, leaving behind a landscape of destruction and despair.

In Missouri, over 5,000 buildings have collapsed or been severely damaged, while over 100,000 homes in St. Louis are without power. Amidst the chaos, the Fire Department is conducting intensive operations to rescue survivors in the most endangered areas.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado hit the Forest Park area — near the city's Zoo and the historic site of the 1904 Olympics — around 2:30 p.m. Friday. Part of the Centennial Christian Church collapsed, saving several lives, but unfortunately one of the people pulled out did not survive.

St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer said, "Today we are focused on saving lives and maintaining safety... but we have a lot of work ahead of us in the days ahead."

Authorities have declared a curfew in the most affected areas, in effect until 6:00 a.m., to ensure security and curb potential chaos.

Another major tragedy strikes the US, as affected communities face the painful consequences of nature, once again demonstrating its ruthless power.
