More than 20 Iranian commanders have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in Iran, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in its latest update.

According to the statement, Israeli warplanes have killed the head of the Intelligence Directorate at the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces as well as the commander of the surface-to-surface missile arsenal of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The statement said: "Since the start of the operation, over 20 commanders of the Iranian regime's security apparatus have been eliminated."

According to the IDF, the head of the Intelligence Directorate at the Armed Forces General Staff, Gholam-Reza Marhabi, was responsible for assessments of the intelligence situation in the Iranian forces and was considered the most senior intelligence officer in Iran.

The statement added: “Marhabi played a key role in intelligence assessments, operational planning, and combat preparations against Israel over the past year and before.”

The commander of the IRGC's surface-to-surface missile arsenal, General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, oversaw most of Iran's long-range missile and cruise missile capabilities, according to the IDF.

"These capabilities are the regime's main offensive weapons against the state of Israel. Bagheri managed Iran's strike power systems and played an active role in the decision-making processes following Iran's attacks on Israel in April and October 2024," the IDF stressed.
