The Israeli military has launched an airstrike on the airport of Mashhad, the third largest city in Iran, located in the northeast of the country.
The attack occurred at a distance of about 2,300 kilometers from Israel, making it the furthest attack carried out by Tel Aviv since the beginning of its operations in the region.
The news was announced by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at around 18:30 Greek time, which said the target was an Iranian supply plane positioned at Mashhad airport.
According to Iranian state media, the attack did not cause any damage to the airport buildings or the runway. However, several other media sources inside Iran reported an airstrike east of the city of Mashhad, without providing further details on the consequences.
A clear message from Israel
The Israeli military has stated that this operation is part of a broader strategy to control Iranian airspace.
"The Air Force is working to achieve air superiority over all of Iran ," the IDF's official statement said.
Meanwhile, another airline has canceled flights to Israel due to the escalating conflict. Etihad Airways has canceled flights between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv until June 22, the company announced today.
"This remains an evolving situation and some disruptions and delays can be expected in the coming days ," she said in a statement.
This comes after a number of other airlines have canceled flights. Israeli airline El Al said it was moving its planes out of Israel in anticipation of Iranian attacks on Ben Gurion Airport.
Aegean Airlines announced that it is suspending all flights to and from Tel Aviv.
Emirates Airlines said some flights were canceled “due to the current situation.” Although planes were initially unable to fly over parts of the Middle East, Syria joined Jordan and Lebanon in reopening airspace today.
