Israel warns the Houthis that they will suffer the fate of Hamas and Hezbollah

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon on Monday issued what he called a final warning to Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi militants to stop rocket attacks on Israel.

He said that if such a thing did not happen the Houthis would have the same "fate as Hamas, Hezbollah and Bashar al-Assad of Syria", as he put it.

Mr. Danon, meanwhile, warned Tehran that Israel has the ability to strike any target in the Middle East, including Iran, adding that the Jewish state would not tolerate attacks by militant groups backed by Tehran.

The Houthis militant group has repeatedly carried out drone and missile attacks on Israel, describing them as acts of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

"Perhaps you haven't paid attention to what has happened in the Middle East over the past year. Let me remind you what has happened to Hamas, Hezbollah, Assad, and all those who have tried to destroy us. Let this be the last warning. You will have the same miserable fate. This is not a threat. It's a commitment. You will have the same miserable fate," Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon told the UN Security Council addressing the militant group.

Speaking before the meeting, Ambassador Danon told reporters: "Israel will defend its people. If 2,000 kilometers are not enough to separate our children from terror, let me assure you, it will not be enough to protect their terror from our forces."

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the Houthi group that Israel was "just getting started" after attacks on multiple targets linked to the Yemeni group, including the airport in Sanaa, ports on the country's west coast and two power plants.

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said he was about to board a plane at the airport when the airport was attacked by Israel. One crew member on the plane was injured, he said.

Israel's elimination of the top leaders of the Palestinian group Hamas and the Lebanese group Hezbollah and the destruction of their military structure along with the fall of Assad represent a series of monumental victories for Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Briefing the Security Council meeting, UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East Khaled Khiari reiterated grave concern about the escalation of violence, calling on the Houthi group to stop attacks on Israel and respect international and humanitarian law.

"Further military escalation could endanger regional stability with negative political, security, economic and humanitarian consequences," Khiari said.

"Millions of people in Yemen, Israel and across the region will continue to bear the brunt of the escalation without end."

Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, while condemning the Houthi group's missile attacks on Israel, also criticized Israel's retaliatory strikes in Yemen, as well as those of what he called the "Anglo-Saxon coalition" of US and British warships in Red Sea, saying they were "clearly disproportionate". /VOA
