Iran has significant military capabilities, despite continuous strikes by the United States and Israel over the past five weeks, CNN reports , citing three anonymous sources with knowledge of the assessments of US intelligence agencies.
According to the report, about half of Iran's missile launchers remain intact, while the country also has thousands of single-use drones in its arsenal. This data suggests that Tehran continues to have significant operational capabilities in the region.
One of the sources cited by CNN emphasizes that Iran "remains capable of causing chaos throughout the region," reflecting intelligence concerns about the country's military potential.
The estimates may also include missile launchers that are currently inaccessible, having been covered by rubble following airstrikes, but which have not been completely destroyed.
The sources add that about 50% of Iran's drone capabilities remain functional, while a significant portion of its coastal defense cruise missiles continue to be operational.
These systems are considered a key element of Iranian military strategy, as they enable the country to threaten navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important corridors for global energy transport and trade.
The latest intelligence assessment also comes as the US has struggled to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, privately acknowledging that it cannot promise to reopen the crucial waterway before the war is over. And while Iran's Navy has been largely destroyed, the first source said, the special naval forces belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps still retain roughly half of its capabilities. The second source said the IRGC still has "hundreds, if not thousands, of small boats and unmanned surface vessels remaining."
As of Wednesday, CENTCOM said in a public statement that more than 155 Iranian vessels had been damaged or destroyed. But Ganzeveld said it has been unclear when the U.S. says it has destroyed Iranian vessels which Navy it is referring to.
The IRGC Navy, she said, is primarily the force responsible for harassing ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
“There are certainly things that remain, the proxies, as well as the drones, and Iran recently demonstrated in the last couple of days that it still retains the ability to target ships in the strait,” Ganzeveld said. “So there are definitely things that remain to be targeted if we want to completely destroy these capabilities.”
