A public statement by journalist and television opinion leader Claudia Conte has caused debate on the Italian political scene, after she admitted to having had a relationship with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.
The case was initially perceived as a private matter, but has taken on political dimensions due to Piantedos' institutional role and Conte's professional commitments in state-related structures. The minister, 60, has been married for years to the prefect Paola Berardino.
The fact that the interview was given for a platform linked to figures close to the Fratelli d'Italia party, at a delicate moment for the government, has also drawn attention. This has raised questions about the reasons for publishing the relationship at this stage.
Conte has held several roles in public institutions. In February, she was appointed, without pay, as an advisor to a parliamentary inquiry commission on security and the state of cities. Earlier, during 2023–2024, she carried out paid activities at a training school for police forces, where she moderated several discussion panels.
According to institutional sources, these commitments were given by the heads of the relevant structures and there are no indications that Minister Piantedosi was involved in the decision-making. Payments for these activities were limited.
Meanwhile, the minister met with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, assuring them that the issue does not pose a problem for the functioning of the government. For its part, the League has expressed support and has not requested changes to the cabinet.
However, the opposition has demanded clarification, raising concerns about the possibility of a conflict of interest and the appropriateness of Conte's appointments to public structures. Its representatives emphasize that the Interior Ministry is a key institution and should remain outside any debate related to private matters.
