A humanitarian emergency has spread across Lebanon, as Israeli attacks have resulted in significant civilian casualties and the displacement of more than 1 million people, according to the non-profit organization Project HOPE.
Aid workers in Beirut say many people lack clean water, access to hygiene supplies and vital medicines.
“The work is extraordinary, because every time we provide and cover a specific need in a specific shelter, we often hear that there are other needs as well ,” said Roy Sayegh, Project HOPE’s country manager in Lebanon.
His team is working around the clock to distribute hygiene kits and bedding supplies to displaced families, as well as to ensure continued medical care for the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
" With the relocation, one of the challenges that happens is the interruption of regular access to the clinic. It's quite important, because people who have hypertension, diabetes ... their medications cannot be interrupted ," Sayegh told CNN on Thursday.
So far, the non-profit organization has provided free healthcare to more than 1,200 people across the country through mobile medical units, as well as maintained medical centers, even in areas affected by airstrikes.
It has provided hygiene supplies to about 2,000 people, but the need goes beyond that, given that approximately 136,000 people are now living in overcrowded shelters, Project HOPE said in its latest report.
“The longer this continues, the more prolonged the displacement will be, the more needs may arise ,” Sayegh added.
