« Don't forget your identity. You are the heirs of great Russia, the great Russia of saints, kings, the great Russia of Peter the Great, of Catherine II, that great and cultured Russian empire, of so much culture, of so much humanity, never get rid of this legacy, you are the heirs of the great mother Russia, go ahead and thank you for your way of being and for being Russian ».
This is a passage from the Pope's last address to Russian Catholic youth - delivered on August 25 in video link to Russian Youth Day in St Petersburg - which was essentially redacted from official accounts, from Vatican transcripts and also ignored by the Catholic Future newspaper. It went unnoticed in all the Italian media.
On the other hand, Nona Mikhelidze, a Ukrainian and researcher at the Istituto Affari Internazionali, a familiar face even on our televisions, noticed it immediately and commented on social networks as follows: "Those words hurt all of us who are colonized and suffered the oppression of the empire in the name of the Great Mother Russia". But it was also noticed by the Russian media, which immediately resumed, pulling on the Pope's jacket and thanking him for his "support".
