Romania's Central Election Commission today banned far-right pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu from participating in the presidential election to be rerun in May, after the November elections were annulled following his victory in the first round.
The rejection of his candidacy, condemned by far-right party leaders as undemocratic, could go to the Constitutional Court.
Dozens of supporters of populist Georgescu gathered outside the election office chanting "Freedom" as they nearly tried to break through the security cordon.
Georgescu submitted his candidacy for the May runoff on Friday, amid suspicions that he would not be allowed to run.
Romania's highest court annulled the vote two days before the second round in December, citing allegations of Russian interference in Georgescu's favor, which Moscow has denied.
Members of US President Donald Trump's administration have called the cancellation of Romania's election an example of European governments suppressing free speech and political opponents. Tech billionaire and Trump adviser Elon Musk has called the decision "crazy."
Georgescu is under criminal investigation on six charges, including membership in a fascist organization and distributing false information on campaign financing, while he has denied all charges.
