Inmates at the Cuenca prison in southern Ecuador, who have been protesting since Wednesday against the transfer of prisoners to other prisons, have taken 57 agents, including guards and police, hostage.
Interior Minister Juan Zapata said during a press conference in Quito that seven of them were police officers.
"We are worried about the safety of our officers" , said the minister.
The hostage-taking came a day after hundreds of soldiers and officers carried out an operation to search for weapons, ammunition and explosives in one of the country's main prisons, in the Andean town of Latacunga.
SNAI, the state office responsible for prisons, said the hostage-taking was in retaliation for that operation. But authorities later said it was in protest of inmates being transferred to other prisons.
