Today is the 5th day of protests in France where citizens are protesting after the killing of 17-year-old Nahel by police forces, last Tuesday, after he disobeyed their order to stop.
During the last evening, 486 people were arrested, while in some cities there were clashes between the police and protesters.
France, the protests don't stop, they demand justice for Nahel! Police fire tear gas in Marseille to disperse the crowd
In Marseille, incidents were reported in different parts of the city. Videos show police using tear gas and officials say at least 56 arrests have been made in the southern city.
But a heavy police presence in central Paris appears to have thwarted the protests.
In Paris, there were especially tensions in the Champs Elysees area. About 45,000 police were deployed across the country on Saturday.
The ministry announced that by 03:30 local time (01:30 GMT) there had been 486 arrests. More than 1,300 arrests were made on Friday night and more than 900 on Thursday.
The protest seems to have also infected Switzerland as incidents have been reported in the center of Lausanne.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said: "It's a quieter night thanks to the decisive action of the police." The average age of the protesters is 17 years old. They are high school students, young and without criminal records."
While Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who was in Paris, said: "I have come to reaffirm my full support for the police and the government."
Why are there riots in France?
On June 27, 2023, a 17-year-old of Algerian and Moroccan origin was shot by a police officer in the Nanter district, a suburb of Paris. The video published on social networks caused outrage in the suburbs of Paris where racism is more pronounced. In the video, two policemen are seen who have stopped the car of 17-year-old Nahel, M., and a voice can be heard saying "I'm going to shoot him in the head". After the shot, the car drives a few meters and then crashes. The teenager died as a result of chest wounds. A policeman has been arrested for the murder.
